Minorities in the Media: Thugs, Hoes, & Illegals

Description

The media has controlled what information we as a society can access. But what happens when we equip individuals with phones with cameras and Twitter feeds? Amazing things! More people begin to notice how bias a lot of the media sources are when it comes to representing minorities; whether that be photo choice on the front page of newspapers or watching basic television shows. Let’s unpack all the words for how minorities are represented in the media and how hashtag activism is combating that old rhetoric.

Jalisa Williams

JJalisa Williamsalisa Williams is a MSU Denver Alumni and the current Violence Prevention Program Coordinator & Advocate at Regis University.  During her graduate program, she pursued a Masters of Social Work degree with an concentration and passion for  interpersonal violence, trauma, women and people of color. She considers herself a part of the wave of millennials that utilize social media to create social change AKA Hashtag Activism. Jalisa is also a certified yoga instructor and creator of Soulflower Denver with a mission to promote self-care, self-awareness, & positive energy.
